Observations from Orlando: PMOs are Embracing Change

The Gartner Program & Portfolio Management Summit is generally regarded as one of the premier events for project management professionals. Typically, the themes we hear Gartner discussing are focused on the horizon, full of predictions with warnings that change is coming and that we all need to adapt. This year’s event was once again held in Orlando, and once again we heard many of the themes that we’ve come to expect.
But unlike in years past—when the conversations were focused on concepts like digitalization, agility and transformation, and those conversations were mostly held at the theoretical level—this year’s gathering had a distinctly different feeling. Perhaps it’s because we’re several years into the imminent changes that Gartner has been predicting. Or perhaps we’re all just becoming more comfortable with those concepts, and have now begun to adjust our thinking accordingly.
Whatever the reason, it was clear that this year, many of the event’s attendees—unlike in years past—are actively taking steps toward (or at least giving real consideration to) embracing the changes that Gartner continues to warn us will one day rock our worlds.
