You already know that one of your critical jobs as a leader is to create and maintain an environment that enables high productivity. You have to be aware of and respond to current culture. You have to activate all individuals in a diverse workforce to collaborate confidently. Even when you know that much, specific actions may not be immediately obvious to you, so here are some tactics to help you improve…
Tactic 1: Stay aware of current culture. You will know better how to lead if you know what your workforce is experiencing. Ask yourself:
- What is the best way to characterize the culture in general? Is it healthy? Toxic? Just frustrating in certain ways?
- Is the workforce reeling from waves of changes?
- What obstacles are commonly experienced by the project workforce? What organizational constraints are there?
- How would you gauge worker engagement on a scale of 1 to 10?
Tactic 2: Adapt your leadership response to current culture. When you know the culture, you can determine the leadership response that will get the best results in building a productive environment, such as:
- organizing and scheduling work in a more effective manner
- monitoring the best areas of focus to help workers avoid obstacles
- constructing empathetic communications that show you understand the culture, the obstacles and so on, and so can be trusted to help work out options
