Your Career: Shooting Star or a Shining Star? The difference can be team work!
Being a team player is not nearly as cliche it may sound. It is a vital part of your career success, not only in your current department, but also in your company as a whole. The fact that you can be an integral part of any team in a supportive or leadership role is one of the main factors looked at in any possible promotion. Yes, a "shining star" is a great thing to see, but what kind of manager does a person make if they are unable to function effectively as a part of a team? Do you recognize in yourself the ability to work within a team? How were you rated in your last review in regards to teamwork? If your skills are not up to par in this area and recognizable to your manager and those on your team, it could be the difference between your next promotion and being perpetually passed over for that golden ring your are aiming for.
When looking to promote from within to any managerial position, one factor that is constantly reviewed is that person's ability to work successfully in a team. Yes, we want individuals who achieve goals assigned to them independently. Your personal accomplishments are key points that indicate your motivation and talents, but do not forget teamwork. There are very few positions you can hold in which your department goals are not accomplished through the team as a whole. How are you going to do that if you are not able to communicate or work
