The Future of the IT Leader
In Digital Transformation and the Death of IT, I wrote about what might happen to IT departments once a digital transformation is complete. It generated a lot of discussion and debate, and it raised questions about what the future of IT leaders. In this article, I want to address those questions in the context of how organizations can fully leverage their leadership and expertise around technology that is still going to be critically important.
In the previous article, I wrote that technology leaders “will be the guides and consultants on emerging technologies, spending their time looking beyond the walls of the organization to understand what is possible and what is being done by others.” That’s the heart of where I think a post-digital transformation technology leadership function needs to focus. Digital transformation isn’t about the technology itself, it’s about how that technology can be leveraged to enable improved business performance. That requires the vision to not only understand current and emerging technology trends but also how those trends can benefit an organization.
Put another way, any technology leader today can talk about artificial intelligence (AI) and provide some examples of how AI can support different business situations. Technology leaders in a digitally transformed business will be able to speak to specific instances where AI can benefit their
