How to Become a Conscious Leader

Conscious leadership has become a mainstream concept in recent times. In the world of project management, mindfulness, consciousness and self-awareness have been re-categorized from “soft skills” to “power skills.” Indeed, knowing how to embrace change, relieve stress and serve as a catalyst for calm are just some of the advantages of being a conscious leader. But what is a conscious leader, and how can you become one?

Conscious leadership is the process by which a leader becomes radically responsible and self-aware, focusing on building a culture of “we” rather than a culture of “me.” While it sounds simple, it’s far from easy. If you’re someone who is yearning for a better normal, here are some practical tips and tools to get you on your journey at work.

1. Embody your values. Many organizations have well-crafted values written on their walls and websites. Unfortunately, that’s typically as far as they go. According to Brene Brown’s research in Dare to Lead, less than 10% of organizations truly live their values. Meaning that 90% of leaders don’t practice what their values preach.
