My fellow project managers are unsettled by what they are calling “The Great Resignation.” I don’t understand why people would leave secure jobs to step into the unknown, especially now that many of our employees can work from home. It will be a serious problem if I lose the experienced team members I have always been able to count on. Should I be doing something different to prevent this loss of skilled people from my project team, even though I have little control over what the company as a whole does with employee pay, work and benefits packages?
A. If you can get your upper management to insist that all employees must be vaccinated and return to working in a collocated environment, you have the best chance to retain your current team. While it looked good at first, people are growing tired of working where children, pets and noisy spouses or relatives interrupt their thought processes as they try to work.
B. Millennials and Gen Z workers are more likely to leave a secure position than anyone else. As a project manager, you have absolutely no control over whether they stay or go. It’s all about where they can get the largest paycheck, and that is out of your control.
