Retention: Are You Reactive or Proactive?
Let's cut to the matter at hand. As a manager, is a retention program on your radar for the year 2002? If not, I am sure you can already guess that I am going to tell you that this will be a fatal mistake. As a professional who has made a successful career out of partnering with managers, I can also assure you that you should not be expected to accomplish this goal alone. However, you could be responsible for championing an active retention program that can be built and put in motion through a partnership with your human resources representative.As I mentioned earlier, quite a bit of pressure has been taken off of IT recruiting, but as a project manager you still need to be attuned to the needs of the team you have in place. Taking that fact into consideration, you will need to partner with your HR representative to build and facilitate a retention program for 2002. Since neither one of you can accomplish the task alone, your number one issue is to be sure that you have an HR person who is dedicated to IT staffing. As you and I both know, IT is an animal unto itself, and from an HR point of view, the whole department can be a bit of a mystery to the inexperienced. To avoid any further bumps down the road, take the time to meet with your HR person on a regular basis. Inform that person of what you have been seeing within your department on any range of subjects: business
