With every new year comes my annual take on the leading technologies that affect our craft—and what we can expect over the coming months. For 2023, these are the hot technologies to watch:

  • Artificial intelligence
  • Cyber security
  • Virtual and augmented reality
  • 3D printing

In 2023, we can expect AI to take center stage in lots of new offerings. What might slow adoption of AI-infused technologies is the forecasted economic slowdown. One common theme that raised skepticism from my research is that most of the predictions for 2023 seemed full of hype—and esoteric in nature.

I am always skeptical when new terminologies and uses arise that can’t be easily explained in simple words, or are missing examples of how they can be applied in business. When used to define what new offerings deliver, terms like “sustainable,” “resilient,” “metaverse,” “transformational” and “immersive” tend to trigger a raised eyebrow in me, as they are rarely accompanied by tangible examples.

So before you get all starry-eyed over big words and bigger promises, insist on real-life examples and use cases that are relevant to the organization’s situation. Best to stick to business cases that focus on benefits that are quantitative, economically viable, profit growing, aligned to business objectives, etc. And…
