5 Steps for Facilitating Team Performance Problems
How do you know if there is a communication problem in your team? There is no absolute clear sign, but it’s important to be aware of the varied types of problems because some require special actions by you during a team performance-related root cause analysis.
Look over this list of communication problem root causes found in a project setting:
- A team member becomes overwhelmed with a work spike and misses a communication once
- A team member’s tendency to get subsumed in a task results in forgetting to update other team members in a timely way
- A team member is uncomfortable speaking up in meetings because of being introverted
- A team member is uncomfortable speaking up because of feeling their input is not respected
- Cultural differences create a tendency to defer to leads or managers in certain circumstances involving communication
- A team member is neurodivergent, resulting in low confidence when communicating in a team setting
This short list includes problems caused by work culture and personality, among others. That’s a broad spectrum to have to deal with for you as a leader. But if you do not deal with communication problems, you will see:
- Delays in task starts or ends
- Design gaps
- Quality problems
- Reduced overall team effectiveness
