To be competitive in the new global marketplace, many organizations are transforming themselves into virtual organizations. This is quite a challenge since many of them comprise segmented and widely disbursed organizational elements that often function independently. This "stove-pipe" structure results in heavily fragmented and often inconsistent business processes throughout the enterprise. Each organizational element, in some cases, implements its own security strategy.

 

One of the challenges in transforming an organization to operate as a single enterprise is establishing a consistent security strategy. This security strategy needs to support a constantly moving workforce by ensuring people are granted access to the resources they need to perform their tasks--regardless of location--and at the same time protect corporate resources.

 

In general, security is a two-phase process. Phase I is user authentication and Phase II is determining a user's access to corporate assets. For any security strategy to be successful, both phases must be addressed.

This article's focus is on Phase II and by no means covers all areas that must be considered in establishing role-base access. The primary purpose of this article is to get you to think about roles.
