Meeting at 11:00? Oh, Good--I Need to Make My Grocery List

This conversation could be taking place at a water cooler near you: "Great, another meeting with Jane this week, where she, our glorious 'meeting leader' drones on and on and Mark parrots his agreement to her every statement. It really seems as though those two could hold meetings without me and then I could get more work done...but then again I wouldn't have time to make my grocery list!" (group laughter and nods of agreement all around!) Attention, Jane: This article is for you!

Do not attempt to adjust your computer screen, you have not entered the Twilight Zone--just the world of corporate America. Believe it or not, some people stay awake during their departmental meetings by taking notes--grocery notes that is. Yes, I know it is hard to believe. What? Even you have done that before? Well, I admit it, I have too, and while I think we have improved as a whole in our team building efforts, the Janes of the world are still around and affording their department team members at least an hour a day for any number of things like, meditation, grocery lists, organizing their palm pilot info, practicing their star drawing abilities, etc. Everything except what the meetings should be about, and that is to accomplish some type of goal.

The main question here is how do you change the structure of your meetings from personal meditation sessions for your team members and get on …
