In the Workforce Management Department, we have previously discussed layoffs. But now, after many years of very full employment with employers going the extra mile for employees, we're back at a more natural state of affairs. Employers are now treating employees like pond scum.

Exaggeration, you say? Imagine that you are called into your supervisor's office, and told you are being laid off.

Today.

Now, actually.

In fact, guards are waiting to escort you the cube you just left. You have a couple of boxes for your stuff. B'bye.

Or imagine you receive an e-mail saying it happens to be your last e-mail at this company. Please report to HR. Each of these inauspicious events has actually occurred--at reputable companies.

This kind of thing is done not because employees have been a discipline problem or inadequate in any way, mind you. It is for reasons of security. Modern risk management methodology persuades companies to minimize the chance for disgruntled employees to do anything disruptive. It's part of your job to pick up the pieces.
