6 Tips to Support New Members: A Success Story From the PMI Northern Italy Chapter
Continuous learning is a must in the world of project management, and having a supportive community and opportunities to thrive are important for success. That's why the PMI Northern Italy Chapter (PMI-NIC) created the NIC-MATE Project, a program that pairs new members with experienced project managers (called mates) for three months.
This program helps new members get started in the chapter and get in touch with experienced professionals. New members have found the support from their mates to be helpful—and an incentive to grow their professional skills.
The idea for the project was born in 2021 after members noticed that, especially after the difficult years of the pandemic, it was important to renew a sense of community.
The NIC-MATE Project was therefore conceived to help new members feel welcome and integrated into the community. In April 2022, a pilot was launched involving a few senior PMI-NIC volunteers (mates), trained and aligned with chapter values, culture and services. The goal is to provide new members with concrete support to navigate the chapter and PMI, and to take advantage of all the opportunities it offers.
The results of the pilot were very positive, and the project was made permanent in 2023. A PM was designated to guide the team of mates, and two calls were opened in 2023 to grow the team. We now have 16 active mates.
