We plan to do benchmarking of our information technology project management operations. My questions are:
1. Is there a network of organizations will ing to cooperate in this arena, and how could I contact such organizations?
2. Are there other large companies interested in cooperative benchmarks in this PM area?
3.There are many firms, I believe, who would be glad to consult in this area. Is there a list of such firms, or how could I easily determine the CV of a good number of such firms?
4. If any one has done this before, would they be willing to share lessons learned?
Thanks, Frank O'Brien, PMP, 803-952-8790

I think that the Software Productivity Consortium does some of that as a nonprofit.

Software Productivity Research offers it as a fee-based service. (see link below)

Gantthead has a few resources related to benchmarking, which can be found here...

Why benchmark? Why not simply identify your issues and address them head on? Your people/managers should have sufficient experience to be able to pinpoint your problems and come up with solutions that fit your organization. Just because they work for someone else doesn't mean they are right for you. A friend of mine once said "The best focus, is to focus on improvement -- not on comparison to others, a standard, or some alleged "best practice". Improve, continuously -- and let the others worry about how they compare to you. Most...organizations spend way too much time and effort on standards, benchmarking, maturity, best practice this and that -- and far too little time actually improving." Stop the comparison and get on with it. With a well-facilitated problem identification and solution session you can do it with your own people a lot quicker.
