The primary goals of the Inception phase are to achieve stakeholder consensus regarding the objectives of the project and to obtain funding. The major activities of the phase include: Define project scope.

Disciplined Agile Delivery has Inception as the name of its startup phase covering all activities required to get a set of teams able to start productively sprinting.

I've also been on some projects where they resembled the movie Inception and I kept thinking I was in a dream within a dream given what I was observing!

I have not used the word "inception", but will try in future projects. Thanks for posting this, Kevin.

I've always used the term 'inception' as a point-in-time phrase -- not one referring to a phase distributed over many days/ weeks.

The inception of the project is when the first project activity takes place. The inception of a phase is when the first task of that project phase is begun.

So, essentially, the generic English meaning instead of a project management terminology.

We use it. But let me say it depends on the project life cycle you have defined. It was made "popular" with the RUP (Rational Unified Process) process. Just to comment is not about define project scope. Is about to create the business case. Something similar you have into PRINCE2.
