Some do one or the other, or both depending on the situation. But which do you prefer?

Ok, it seems that real time is the favorite. Now how about in Agile projects, and more specifically for individual tasks: ideal or real time?

I use bottom to top method to calculate activities and durations.
I consider usually some buffer, risk , delays in each tier of the calculation.
Kevin, I agree with you on bottom up will be more accurate more details but time consuming and costly so top down will give general guide line for budget

Can we consider ideal time as the time spent by the resource/s on a specific work/activity without any disturbances, without dependencies etc and real time as the actual time to finish a certain activity or work considering other activities like attending meetings, dependencies on other members or teams, idle time etc. If yes, then real time estimates is what I work with putting appropriate buffers.

If time permits I prefer the bottom up estimates. It increases the probability of completing the project on time.

Can someone give an example or two of when ideal time estimating would be beneficial over real time estimating? Nothing comes to mind at the moment.
