George -

Trying to stir the pot are you :-) ?

Companies at lower levels of organizational PM maturity will treat PMs as Project Coordinators...

No they are not the same. Project manager has more power and duty than a project coodinator.

A project coordinator sounds more like a paper pusher :-)

Really funny ! So what's a paper pusher exactly ? Don't be upset but my english is not efficient as an american native so I ignore many slangs.

Hehe, I learned that expression from an American friend of mine. It basically means a bureaucrat.

If you check my profile and what I do with regards to projects, you'll see exactly what that term involves lol. Project coordinator is more an entry-level ; project manager is professional level (mostly).

I have done both (at the same time). I coordinated the upgrade of our SQL Server databases to the latest version. I worked with several teams who were managing their part of the project. I was in charge of coordinating schedules, tracking where we were in the projects, reporting status, facilitating meetings.
I also managed the development of several applications. When I manage a project I assign tasks, communicate with stakeholders, track risks, manage resources, etc.
The project manager is more deeply involves, whereas the project coordinator is doing more administrative work and tracking.

I would not go to comparing project coordinator to a paper pusher.

In case could be a more junior role in a large project or a PM for a small project.

How do you compare the project coordinator to PM I, PM II and PM III?
