Hello,

I'm looking for a career coach that has helped someone transition from a Business Analyst role to a Project Manager role. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Will

I do not think you will have any problem. However, we are always here to answer your questions.
Kevin,

I hope you are right. What are your thoughts on the finding a PM role?

I was attempting to find a new opportunity a few years back (I believe it was focused on mostly BA roles) and experienced frustration from using the Black Hole process. (If you aren't familiar with that phrase, it is something I learned from the author Liz Ryan. Here's one of her articles on the topic. https://www.forbes.com/sites/lizryan/2017/.../#5855c05f6e26) Granted, my lack of success could have been for a variety of reasons, but the lack of response was disappointing. So, any thoughts/advice/suggestions you can provide is appreciated.

Thanks,

Will

Will, begin with thinking about and writing down your responsibilities, accomplishments, success stories, etc. The Business Analyst role is a very important role, especially, when executed in such a way that you are leading and guiding important organizational decisions. There are other aspects as well such as unraveling the chaos to find the needs and value, organized and understand the importance of strong documentation, able to level-set expectations and remind stakeholders of the core-product, act as the liaison b/t business and technical solutions, etc. You get the point.

How will you write these to showcase to a potential employer or project management opportunity that the skills you exercise on a daily basis are transferable to the new role with limited time-to-competency?

Also to keep in mind is there are many roles seeking a combined PM/BA. Look for those opportunities as well. That may be the better route for you at this point in your career. I really enjoyed my mixed role and will provide a great story in your resume and help down the line to go full-time PM role, or decide you want to go back to a BA role.

Hope that helps,
Andrew
