The work being done to legalize and regulate marijuana. Understanding the current legal status of cannabis and the use in workplace.

There will be many issues of safety concern, is it safe to drive forklift after consuming medical cannabis, are you prepared to deal with this issue/ how to balance between the duty to accommodate and the requirements for fit for the job?

What the new law will mean for the average pot-friendly people?

I would see cannabis the same as I see alcohol. Just because it is legal does not mean you would expect to be able to consume at work.

Drinking alcohol is legal in most countries. However, drinking alcohol on the job or being intoxicated will usually violate HR policies or standards and be grounds for suspension or termination.

I would think that existing policies will usually cover any type of purposefully caused inappropriate behavior, regardless of the cause including pot, large quantities of nutmeg, sniffing glue, etc...

I doubt that legalization would be a strong incentive to those who are tempted to come to work drunk, high or otherwise under the influence. They would likely already be "experimenting"...

Kiron, there are a lot of grey area around that right now. Believe me it will be another chapter for HR managers and supervisors to deal with it.

In-line with other's comments. Regardless of legal or not, unless specified as okay, medication and work, or driving, is not appropriate, deemed as working under the influence.

Riyadh,

Most companies prohibit presence in the work environment intoxicated. That cover alcohol and any drugs.

More especially in the construction industry.

A doctor may also prescribe Percocet, Motrin or any other opiates that make it difficult to function in a work environment. The employee is expected to use a certain amount of judgement on whether they can fulfill their duties. If they cannot, they are expected to not come to work. If they do come to work and an accident occurs, they are at fault.
