There are some companies that are phasing out the Gantt chart due to Agile. Will Gantt charts become extinct in some organizations?

It will remain there. I fill it is a integral part of project management - Waterfall, Agile or any other. It radiates lot of information easy to understand to everyone and flexible to handle.

If not for anything else, the Gantt provides a nice visual representation of the overall timeline; for example, in kick-off PPT slides or status report using tools like Office Timeline.

Software development and release is one aspect of I.T. And incremental delivery is one aspect.

But sometimes a whole system is being implemented or replaced all at once. Many things have to be planned in advance, and delivered on time. In this type of scenario, Gantt is still going to be very useful.

Some projects also require hardware and/or networking.
Training on the new software. Purchasing (in bulk for discounts...)
Running cables before employees are in place. Firewall/security settings.
Provisioning of the hardware (sometimes by a 3rd party under contract), so the correct version of O.S., patches, other software, configuration settings, etc. are in place. This takes lead time and coordination, if being done on a large scale, another good use of Gantt.

I don't believe Gantt Charts will ever go away. It all depends on company preference.

I agree with the previous comments, Gantt is not something that will disappear. It is merely a visual representation of work/activity and the underlying methodology to get that work done does not need to change the representation. We will always use the visual aid that is most appropriate to the situation and gets the point across efficiently.

The Gantt chart as a communication tool can still exist on high level. But a Gantt chart as an scheduling tool is already insufficient. Specially in environments where you have to share resources among projects. What we need to do is go back to the good old network of activities and milestones including their relations. And then you need clever software for creating load graphs and priority lists that are meaningful. You do not need replanning anymore (on of the hurdles with Gantt). In Agile a network is also beneficial.
