Kevin,

Benefits I can see is the independent eyes not in the immediate execution of the project. Someone that can stay back see the forest, not just one tree.

This is an excellent point I think having a third party independent eyes has a very big advantage. I worked most of my life with third party inspection companies and I agree with you 100%.

Like they say it is always good to have an extra pair of eyes ,
It is always good to have somebody with a fresh vision to maybe give you an opinion.
Help us to reduce the bias that we naturally are prone to have.
Help us to discover blind spots , which we take for granted sometimes.

That being said you must choose wisely your SME or Consultant.

Best Regards

Kevin, I might have different views here as not always the case with getting consultant would be beneficial, if the size of the project does not have the room to pay fees for consultant then that cost is a burden, nowadays with the competition among vendors they provide free consultation all we have to do listen to all and make comparative report to choose the best idea or solution, the other aspect sometimes more opinion create confusion, big corporate they have many SME in different topic they might act as consultant within.
For external consultant my question who can validate the integrity and knowledge of the consultant and how - there are over ten points to choose the right consultant that's a full-time job

Well there are definite benefits to the consultant's wallet ;-) As they always say: it depends...on size, complexity, criticality etc.

I would do that only if Steering Commitee ask this because they want addidtional assurance. Otherwise - project manager is apponted and he is responsible for the managing the project.
Instead of external consultant I would oragnise training for team. I don't like to take away responsibility from team members.

Kevin -

the two reasons I'd use an external consultant to augment the work of the PM and team are:

1. Independence (as already stated by others)
2. Deep domain expertise - for example, if we are implementing an ERP solution for the first time, I might want to support my internal PM with an external one who has done multiple such implementations
