Okay, the company has tapped you to take the lead in a project that is well underway. A big one - with CRM and Internet implications. And the kicker is that there has been no formal planning and the tracking is hit and miss. So, how do you get organized? How will you take the lead, rally the troops and make the project a winner?

Let eveybody carry on while you take a couple weeks and PLAN, starting with clear objectives, deliverables, and success criteria and working backwards until you get to where everything you need to continue is available. Collect duration estimate ranges, and plug it into a TRACKABLE SCHEDULE that takes into account the VARIABILITY and UNCERTAINTY suggested by those ranges. Most of my single-project clients can get necessary people comfortable with a process like Critical Chain Scheduling and Buffer Management in a couple days and pull together a schedule in a week if diligent and well-planned or two-three tops if there isn't complete commitment to the process.

Good advice Frank - I especially like the idea of duration ranges - can tell you have a practical approach to PM. I do the same thing. Realistic plans are never based on "if everything goes right".
