It is all about teamwork and motivations
What have you done in the past and it worked?

Good ideas! How about anything for where teams are not co-located, and may only meet via conference call most months, has anyone found anything that helps break the ice there?
Tim, if I were a younger woman this would be my field of research - how to effectively build a virtual team. I'd love to write a book on that, but right now the pages would be mostly blank :-)

One idea I've had is to make each week (or month) have a theme where people can share photos, stories, etc from their lives - like May is "pet month" and June is "dream vacation month" and July is "green thumb month", etc.

I don't think there's any ONE thing that will be repeatably fun, what I would recommend is to have a monthly submission by all the people in the team and pick from a hat (one reviewed for being appropriate) the activity and let the person who proposed it, host it.

We celebrate all the personal and professional milestones/events of individual team members and ask to share their experiences- ranging from purchase of car to a vacation in order to make all of them feel as part of an extended family. Such discussions lighten up the atmosphere and makes work more of fun as people are excited to pile up their calendar with achievements to have a great celebration, obviously fun discussions too.

Team-building activities such as team games goes a long way in establishing the camaraderie among the members.

We celebrated a big achievement on our project with "Celebrate YOUR way!" On one afternoon each member of the management team hosted a different event and team members could choose. (we had signups for weeks in advance.) Some went to an escape room, some played golf, some went on a boat tour, some went on a walking tour of the historic district, etc. It was not only nice to let people choose but it was good because we met different people in our small groups (BIG project). I hosted the boat tour with 12 team members I had not spent much time with. Very nice!
