Samuel -

HBR has an article on this topic today - here are some of the tips they provide:

1. Give 100% attention, or do not listen
2. Do not interrupt
3. Do not judge or evaluate
4. Do not impose your solutions
5. Ask more (good) questions
6. Reflect

Kiron
I am going to check that

Thank you Kiron.................

There are two important communication skills: inquiry and advocacy. Inquiry is the idea of understanding the other person's mental model. The book, "The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook" has much practical advice on how to improve skills with both.

I've found that one of the most effective means of listening is to just 'walk around' and ask open ended questions of project members. The answers, as one listens, often bring to light problems that would not be uncovered this early. This early detection is critical to the success of a project. The answers to open ended questions give excellent insight. Far too often in meetings if you just ask a yes/no question, like 'is everything OK?' you will get a 'yes.' People might tend to hide the bad news. But walking around and informally listening to team members surfaces actual problems. And we know that the sooner a problem surfaces the better to get started with a solution. Whereas a problem discovered late can more easily cause failure.
