We usually wouldn't want our kids to be a professional fighter, go off to war, or be the first to inhabit another planet. But would we want them to be a project manager? Saving Changes...

Timely question for me as my daughter wants to follow in my footsteps and become a PM. I have mixed feelings. I've enjoyed it and she's a lot like me so there are aspects that will suit her (organizing things, being in charge, communicating). But it's so hard and I don't wish for her the heartache I've gone through. The stress level is very high. In the end, I'd choose for her something with better life/work balance, lower stress, and (in my case) less travel. Saving Changes...
My dad and mum forced me to leave engineering and study business and end up finding my way back to engineering through Project Management.
It is my children call and I will never ever interfere in their future the way my parents did, but I can see that one of them wants to be a dentist like her grandfather and the other one wants to be an architect like her mum. I think my responsibility in this project is to motivate them to reach their target on time, on budget, and at the best quality.

Hi Kevin -
In this Agile world I guess you are planning to play the role of Scrum Master in your children's careers. :)

I will give them free-agency to decide on their career path. If they happen to choose Project Management then I would support them in any way possible. Saving Changes...

A project manager, yes - not in the professional sense but a PM to manage the greatest project called LIFE :)
As a career, it is up to the kid. If they choose Project Management, I wouldn't say NO.

Love how you said this: "A project manager, yes - not in the professional sense but a PM to manage the greatest project called LIFE"
My son has expressed interest in IT and while I was studying PM, one day he was peeping into my notes and said that it sounds like some of what he's learning in IT club...seems he's on a project management path. This is an interesting question raised and I'll support my son in whatever he chooses also.

Yes - I would like them to be project Managers as they can manage everything!
But I cannot influence them, it's need to be their own choice and will support the decision.
Mainly the skills of PM is a very good. Saving Changes...
As Kavitha says, I'll leave it to my son to figure that out for himself the way I did, but I believe competency in project management as a discipline is critical in many roles so hopefully he gets some experience with it even if he doesn't hold the title...
