Studying for CAPM

I have some questions regarding chunking out sections to create an effective study plan for the CAPM.

Tools:

Udemy course to get the PDU credits to qualify
PMBOK guide 6th edition

I have searched for not study guides and honestly am having trouble since the 6th edition revision. It seems all updated references are more geared towards the PMP of what is available.

Question: I saw a video from a woman who is a PMP, she also has a book through Amazon (based on 5th edition), but her video is on the idea of reading the PMBOK 3 times like many suggest.

Fast forwarding through her opinion on that she gave 2 interesting suggestions. She states if she was studying for the PMP exam she would focus most on the process groups. For the CAPM she would focus on knowledge areas.

Is there truth to that? I printed the CAPM exam outline and in section one it does include knowing or understanding the five process groups and their processes of each. I can see that in itself is going to take some time and repetition to remember the information and is part of a section only worth 6% of the total score?

It’s a bit overwhelming and not sure where to start or what areas to focus most of my attention. Do I focus on the five groups and their process, get those down and move on to next section? Do I focus most of my efforts and time through the knowledge areas primarily and sort of skim or spend less time on the beginning sections for a more broad idea to understand?

Rita’s book is often suggested but the 6th edition PMBOK material isn’t coming out until almost the end of the year. I don’t have time to wait for that. Material including practice tests are so easy to find for the PMP and I haven’t found many extras for CAPM to use.

I want to create the correct focal point and path of study without becoming overwhelmed or feeling lost with this guide. I know the guide is just that, it’s not meant for study but more of a reference of understanding.

What can and should I do?

Main feedback I’m lolking for:

What areas are the CAPM focused on? Knowledge areas or process groups? If both, how much time to spend on each in relation to what will be tested?

It seems the exam is heavy on knowledge areas and less on the process groups. The five groups is only part of the intro and part of a chunk that’s 6%.

Sorry if I’ve repeated anything. Just want certain questions clear and looking for guidance.

Thank you.

Have you read the CAPM handbook and the exam content outline from PMI? That clearly defines what is in the exam. The latest CAPM exam prep book is what you need along with referencing the PMBOK and following the exam content outline.

I have the exam outline. As far as the exam prep book, where can I find the latest version? Rita’s prep book has not been updated for the CAPM and isn’t coming out until close to end of this year.

I know it's not updated but to be honest the CAPM changes are minimal and if you cross reference that current version of Rita's book with the current PMBOK, you will be fine. You could also Try Joe Phillips books, which is published 2013, and he has the most popular Udemy course also for the hours that you need:

So would it be safe to use Rita's book for the section tests, charts, and how she broke down the information for understanding?

I know on their website they advise not to use the third edition as it can be hurtful for test takers once the exam has changed. I don't know if I would like to use it as a sort of primary study guide.

I think addition to the CAPM book, whichever book you use, as long as you follow PMI's advice, you should be fine, which is:

If you are taking the new exam based on the PMBOK® Guide – Sixth Edition, you should note the following updates to the Guide:

A new chapter on the role of the project manager. The new exam will test on the competencies, experience, and skills of effective project leaders across four distinct learning objectives.

Two renamed Knowledge Areas:

Schedule Management (formerly known as Time Management)
Resource Management (formerly known as Human Resource Management)

Four new sections in every Knowledge Area:

Key Concepts
Trends and Emerging Practices
Tailoring Considerations
Considerations for Agile/Adaptive Environments

Agile/adaptive considerations from chapters 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10.
