Hi PM Community -
I am learning about Agile Scrum and work on traditional/waterfall model development. Would like to understand what role a Manager plays in Agile. Any thoughts on this topic will be helpful.

Srikana -

I would never say that managers aren't required to support agile delivery, but as the others have stated, their mindset and approach in working with team members might need to be adjusted.

While small projects might be successfully delivered with only a Scrum Master, more complex projects or those run in larger organizations will still need a project manager to orchestrate work between sub-teams, engage stakeholders outside of the agile teams, manage risks, financials and all the other fun stuff they would have done on a project following a deterministic approach. The key difference will be that they will not be directly engaging in the individual agile teams' activities - those are the responsibility of the teams themselves and the PM will work within an "umbrella" layer to support those teams...

I fully agree with my fellow colleagues comments, there is nothing much for me to add.

Hi Sante - Do they take up the role of Scrum Master in Agile projects then?
They might but generally not. The Scrum Master is a specialized role. I've always said that the Product Owner is the closest thing to a PM, moreso than the Scrum Master.

Thank you all. Now I have a better understanding about agile roles. I work in a large organization wherein waterfall is the primary methodology practiced and very few agile. Since there was many Technical manager roles I was curious to know how their role fits in if agile is adopted.
