Why do some network diagrams start with zero, and some start with one?

Just to add some information a network diagram only shows dependencies but not durations. What includes durations, start date, end date are related artifacts like Gantt Charts, PERT Charts (when PERT is not about a chart), etc. To use ES (early start) with zero value in the first activity is a convention. You can use one as the value.

It really is a personal preference, but one is the more common choice as we tend to think of things starting on the first day of a project. The main thing to remember regardless of whether you start at zero or one is to subtract one from the EF when you add the duration to the start day...

"0" makes sense to me, but I saw many using '1" the time I was studying for the PMP.

As Kiron said, it is a personal preference but it makes more sense to start with zero and causes less confusion. For the exam, always do start with zero.

I completely agree with Kiron on this, it's just a personal preference.
