Do you prefer to be a Functional Manager with more authority?

Rather than a Project Manager with less authority, if you have done both roles what is your preference and based on what kind of criteria?

coming from a infra background I would love to work as FM rather just working as PM, but it all again depends what sort of project or a product you are handling.

Anish, I see your points it is true FM has more potential and rewards than just a PM

Vincent , thanks for your comment, I meant by authority that you can hire & fire, transfer,reward or write up and take decision to alter budget or approve a work most of the time the PM has limited authority and needs to go back for approval for example even he/she can not authorize spending for L & L or worse can not approve overtime etc
Powerful leader with authorization is better that a weak leader with no authorization

Ravi, tha's because most set up in offices is in favor of FM no PM even Capex Manager is considered as FM not PM.

I m of the opinion from organization point a functional manager can more effective function rather then a just a project manger as he can bring in his own tech skill in play, again the person need to decide what type of role he need to ply my vote will always go to working as fictional manager this is more rewarding in IT infra projects.
