Flash cards

I haven’t used flash cards as a study tool in forever.

I’m using them for terms and wondering what’s the best way to practice these? Currently I read off the definitions and try to remember which term it’s associated with. I’m not sure if this is really effective over time to where if you ask me the term, I can recall the definition.

What is your method to flash cards and do you have any tips to make it quickly effective? Do you write your own or do you use ones already made from a source or print them out? I know there’s a few apps that have flashcards also.

Btw - I’m using Joseph Phillips Udemy prep course and he suggests printing his flash cards and writing them out on index cards. Does it matter if you write them out? Seems very time consuming when I can really use that time studying.

It is proven the act of writing assists with memory. Generally, I create, but I purchased the ones I used for PMP preparation. That said, I did a lot of writing in other areas of my preparation. Minimizing the footprint of study materials makes it easier to carry around with you; like your daily commute, other car rides, etc.

Try this flashcard technique -
1. Get three containers and mark them A, B, C
2. Take a set of your flashcards and begin
3. Those you get right, go into container B, those you get wrong go into container A.
4. Start again with those that you got wrong that are in container A
5. Repeat step 3 until all are in container B.
6. Start again. All should now be in container B.
7. Those you get wrong, go back into container A, and those you get right go into container C.
8. Keep repeating until all are in container C.
9. Do it all over again :)
10. You've mastered your flashcards :)

I actually just ordered myself these. It's updated to the PMBOK 6 and after "looking inside" it has photos to associate certain information and seems like a really handy tool to have.

I'm pretty visual so I think using these types of flashcards will really set me up for success. When writing, I can remember notes more than information I may write on a flashcard.

You might want to take a look at it and maybe order one. Worth a shot. Can't wait to receive it Monday! Not sure if they have an updated PMP version, but I'm sure it's available if you're not studying for the CAPM.

I created my own. Meaning I bought the index cards, and write my own flashcards for the PMP Exam. It helped a lot

I've never used flash cards, I observed that in the USA, there are a lot of flash cards, for kid, for college, for certifications...

I had made flash cards for myself initially. When I came across Joseph Phillips flash cards, I printed them and they were quite useful to carry around with me wherever I went...but I did actually write and rewrite a lot also which I believe aids memory more.

I never used flash cards before. Don’t really think I need them but many says they are helpful. I guess it depends on your study style.

Very true it depends on study style. I did it with the PMP because of the large amounts of information/ But I didn't do it for the ACP.

Definitely style dependent. Best to understand what works for you as an individual and follow that path accordingly.
