Dear All,

I am writing to know about fellow professionals opinion on the present situation in Project Management Professional Job Market. What I feel is that there is slow down of available international opportunities for the profession. Further, I observed that LinkedIn network is least helpful and other fellow professionals share the same opinion that they never received any offer or even interview call, after years of applying on this network. To link the both issues could you please share your opinion that it is either less Jobs for PM in Job Market or its LinkedIn which has no serious active role in Job Market and one should diversify their search to get some results.

Thanks & best regards,

Agree that I observed also an slow down in the market, however LinkedIn for me is still the main contact with headhunters and hr managers. My lately main concern with LinkedIn is the amount of Spam that I'm receiving.

Asif -

Globally there might not be a slow down in PM opportunities, but there can be in specific industries or regions. It come down to how mobile you are willing to be and whether you have a large enough network to help get you in front of a hiring manager as the majority of roles are never posted on job boards.

Hi Asif,
I concur with you on this. In my experience I never had any success through LinkedIn, even though I have good connections.

Hi Asif,

I use LinkedIn primarily as a means to expand my professional network, not so much in job searching. I agree with you: it is not a very effective way to find work in project management. I found that the most effective way is still to get referrals, and networking can be a good place to start.

Hi Andrew,
It is refreshing and assuring to hear that you have had some good success via linkedIn. I am yet to have that experience. As a matter fact, I have started up as a freelance PM whilst preparing for the PMP.
At this stage, I am willing to do some short-term voluntary PM to build my portfolio and get some referrals/testimonials, therefore, I would be grateful if you could recommend sources or organisation that I may approach for that.
Thank you and I look forward to your feedback. You may inbox me at [email protected]
Kind regards,
Josephine.

I find LinkedIn as useful for maintaining connections and also when meeting with a new client or prospect it is a useful tool to get background. I have not found it to be useful directly for jobs or projects

It's sad to me that it's so very hard to get into project management when there are many job openings for experienced project managers! That said, as a hiring manager (in the past) if I read a resume I liked, my next step was to review their LinkedIn profile. If there was disagreement between the resume and profile, I didn't follow up at all. They need to be in sync and be up to date. I figure if a person is looking for a job but hasn't bothered to update their LinkedIn profile, they probably won't bother to do my job the way I want it done.

Josephine, some suggestions for you to check into would be Habitat for Humanity or other local charities. If you are in a church, you may be able to manage a project for them. Churches always have stuff going on. I would also suggest taking every opportunity to hang out with PM's. Join your local PMI chapter and go to all the meetings. Volunteer there to manage something. If there are other local networking groups available join them and go.

It seems to me that the key to getting a job is meeting a lot of people and keeping your eyes and ears open for the opportunities, and then going for it!

But that takes a while and can get discouraging. Hang in there!!!

Hi Asif, my feeling is that LinkedIn is a pretty good resource for listing jobs. But remember that many jobs are listed because of the regulations or corporate policy to do so, even though 9 times out of the time they will fill the role internally. The best way around this is to approach recruitment companies directly who are incentivized to ensure the job is real and available to external applicants.
But Sante Vergini in that case linked In should inform their users , because many of Job seekers very well rely on LinkedIn and keep on sending CVs in vain to thousands of seemingly attractive Jobs.

It would be impossible for LinkedIn to know if the job poster was mainly intending to fill the position internally. So it's not their responsibility to inform users Asif.

I would have to agree also LinkedIn is very challenging, for people that are seeking work in project management but you can receive good connections with people that are in the industry and they can give you advice and good recommendations.
I agree with you, linked In more like a social networking site for Professional.

Hi Asif,

Last couple of years PM job openings were lean as recession prevailed all over the World w.r.t new projects.....That phase is over .Within 6 months from now you can have a great future..Am also waiting for that D-Day....
Suresh, could you tell us what was the reason of recession and how things will improve within 06 months?
