I attended PMI's Research & Education Conference a few years back and found it intellectually stimulating as it provided academics with the opportunity to share their research with attendees to provide us with insights on where the profession is going.

PMI does have a fairly healthy budget for funding meaningful research so if you have a good topic, contact them!
