Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) Implementation

Hello,
I am looking for a good read/ advice on earned value management systems implementation. My focus is on how to implement EVMS on an organisation with no EVM experience. My plan is to treat the EVMS implementation as a project by itself. Any advice/ suggestions is highly appreciated.

I was in charge of that in my actual organization. To be honest, the only thing you have to be aware is the right people give you the needed data at the right time. The method is too simple to implement. You have an alternative named Earned Schedule Management (you can find the reference inside the PMI“s Practice Standard of EVM). We use it at the begining because the data I can get from the people. The most useful for us (the key "to sell" the method) are the variables that can help you to predict the future estate from actual estate.
This can be a significant change to an organization, so you are right in wanting to treat it as a project.
Depending on where you are starting, this could involve fundamental changes to Finance processes and reporting, changing how people plan projects, changing how time reporting and non-labor expenses are tracked and so on.
As such, do thorough stakeholder identification and analysis and engage the most impacted stakeholders as early as possible.
EVM also assumes a certain level of organizational project management capability and maturity - if that is not in place, it will make immaturity more visible, but won't solve it...

Hi Kiron,
Thank you for the feedback. Yes, a thorough stakeholder analysis is in my agenda. What I am struggling is to find really is a good article on planning and executing the implementation. I hope someone in the community is able to help.
Regards,
Joe

Does your organization utilize a project management software? The key to successful implementation of EVMS is having a robust project management software and actually using it with a true spirit. All the EVM metrics you are going to define and pull are going to rely on the data from your software
In some organizations I have seen, the PM software is but another electronic junkyard, used more like an MIS system to pull reports for senior management than for actual project tracking and communication - the data is "polished". With such data, you will never be able to implement a EVMS system that can be used for actual project tracking.
In your project charter, you should clearly mention that the success criteria for your implementation depends on the accuracy of your source system. Saving Changes...

I concur with Kiron on this.
In my opinion, commitment and support from the key stakeholders is very important for the success of the EVM implementation. So, the first step is to establish an implementation team which should be responsible for developing the strategy plan and schedule. Then the team can focus on the goals, and objectives, overall time frame, and resource requirements etc. Saving Changes...
