What is the job description for a project leader? Do you believe that it's the same as a "project manager" or are these different jobs?

It can be the same post or person. It depends on the organization and project. Sometimes a project leader is different from the project manager.

Daniel, we had a similar discussion about differentiation between a Manager and a Leader and that could apply here as well.

My theory is it is one job, but as project complexity increases, the competency for leadership increases rather than the process driven management functions of project management as per knowledge areas.

Leadership is more focused on enablement of people to get the job done, trust and support to let people grow and experience empowerment and more responsibility. Management is more foucused on people giving them directions on what and how to do. This can get contraproductive especially in knowledge worker project environments.

Usually project leader is an step back in experience than project manager. Project leader is not project leadership. Project leader is a role.

It depends on organization. One project has many project leader as a role per unit. But the only one project manager drives the project.

A project can have many people who are truly leaders but had only better have 1 project manager.
