What are the pitfalls if WBS is standardised in areas such as Research,
Innovation/Developing new products?

The only, major pitfalls that I see are

1. A copy-paste culture, where people copy without due diligence or proper review and modifications

2. No standard WBS or any other document can cover all situations, so you have to think out of the box and add what could be missing and is unique to your project.

None. In fact, some companies, sell "standard" WBS and mainly WBS dictionary created for some domains or type of projects.

the main pitfall would be that since every project is unique, a "canned" WBS could create inertia or laziness to identify and decompose scope elements which are outside of the template...

Rajesh,

Any standardized structure creates on major pitfall, we use it like a checklist. And we forget to check what is different, what doesn't fit in the standard
