Usually At the beginning of the project you set what you want to measure and what are the reference with which you are going to compare the performance of the specific activity.
You should have some reference point.

Tamer,

Look up in PMBOK, see those that make sense in your project.

What are the pros and con of each? see there limits in your specific case

KPI as normally part of the Organizational Process Assets and are defined early in the project / tailored if necessary.

What is expected, who is the audience (executive, client, team), what are the current organization's standards (EVM), how will it be shared (format and regularity). For reference, definitely look at the PMBOK as one reference point, then compare with other materials for additional context.

Hi Tamer,

As far as I know, it does not have a specific formula. This is use for tracking your project performance and to ensure that projects get completed on time. The scope and terms of an organization’s KPIs may differ from project to project.

The following KPIs are normally use for PM.

1. return on investment (ROI)
2. productivity
3. cost performance
4. customer satisfaction
5. schedule performance
6. employee satisfaction
7. alignment with strategic business goals.

There are endless KPI's that can be setup for a project. There isn't a specific formula for doing so; they are customized for each project.

Your organization project management system should include the performance metrics or performance indicators that you should be watching and measuring on every project.

Assuming there are none, then we need to consider two types of metrics:

1. Organizational Metrics, for example, what percent of the projects are completed within the cost and schedule parameters; what pct are successful; what is the average pct of changes on projects, etc. I can list 20 or more that organizations should care about.

2. On a specific project, we will link to the org. metrics. For example, pct of changes, no or pct of defects; no or pct of waivers from spec; etc.

So to answer your question, we need a small guide :)

I am with Rami here. KPI has sense at organizational level. Projects are started to ahieve organizational objectives and to know if you are doing that you need KPIs at organizational level and then to derivated them and adjust them to the initiative.

I concur with my colleagues here.
I think you need to establish specific and measurable KPIs after consulting with your team and key stakeholders, since getting buy in from all parties is essential.
