While this is a worthwhile aspiration, three challenges are:

1. Lack of a single, sufficiently influential & empowered sponsor
2. Stakeholder alignment to the goal and the solution approach will be as difficult as that towards controlling climate change
3. Securely and safely storing the nuclear materials salvaged from the warheads to prevent them from falling into worse hands

Great question and I wonder what the cost would be.

I concur with Kiron on this.
I think the international campaign to abolish nuclear weapons (ICAN) should take initiative for this kind of project.

Following Kiron, contentious stakeholders would refuse to work toward competing the project, and many would sabotage it. Also, no sponsor has the authority to make the stakeholders work toward completing the project. From a technical standpoint eradicating nuclear weapons is easy, but as with most projects politics make doing so difficult.

What we need is all world leaders to be environmental conscious and act in a way human is supposed to. Today we spend lots of money to defend imaginary country boundaries and we stack nuclear arsenal, but same amount could be well spent on research on how to make our lives better.
Can this be done? Yes.
What is lacking? Political will-power.

Political will power for some of the countries is to subjugate other countries, return of Imperialism and to make sure that the economic advantage they get on the names of nuclear armament, Technology proliferation and the unaccounteed money they earn, This issue need emotional intelligence which considers every human equal to other, sorry that hasn't happened until date. The feeling of insecurity between US and USSR, India and China , India and Pakistan, Experience of France getting badly defeated by Germany in second world war, Israel getting threats daily from arab world for complete Annhilation gave a feeling to political leadership that Nucelear armaments give deterrance against the unconditional threat and humiliation so they started a race, this is not going to end, sorry a blatant statement but do you consider this to happen in India or Pakistan where we have a enimity since last 70 years or Indo China where we faced defeat due to number of reasons. This is a day dream , not a lack of politcal will, saying because India faced 1000 years of humiliation by Invadors simply because they were not intelligent on militarily.

Hi Vijay,

The stake holders on this project has to agree first on a common objective which is bigger than individual thought process and dreams. Who are the stake holders , not the presidents but the public of the involved countries.
Action 1: Consensus from public leading the goverment deciding to present the bill to other stake holders , rest all after this, I will repeat , Political will of the 60's and 70's era havebb changed as of today.
Action 2. Awareness in public about the danger of annhilation so that that they become willing.
This project doesn't seem feasible, who will ask Trump, Putin, Xinping, Pak Army to come and talk on this project.
