I think in project management you can go 100% remote as long as you have the right tools for virtual conferencing. I am doing this for 6 years now without any major issues. I personally think remote workers outperform onsite workers because of the silent, distraction free environment at home,but they need to compromise somewhat on social interactions being work at home all the time. I work 100% remotely and have successfully managed large Agile and waterfall projects. Several of those projects were large multimillion dollar projects with many teams. As we all know, communication is the key to PM success. You have to do that well, no matter where you are.
I have even been hired over a pnone call, with no F2F interview, a few times.
Remote Isn’t for everyone, but it works well for me.
