Some of my co-workers were able to go to the Gartner Conference in DC this week. They returned yesterday and I asked what they learned. They said they were told that most of the documentation we do is a waste of time. In particular, the risk register should be done away with. The reasoning is that most projects do not properly use them anyway. We should just wait for issues to occur and deal with them.
As an RMP, I am taken aback that Gartner is taking this stance.
I need to do more research with Gartner to figure out why they would be saying this.

I would agree that the implementation of project risk management practices is often done poorly and is only given lip service.
So if we look at it as a value derived relative to effort expended, I'd say that in some cases, the most efficient solution might be to stop it.
However, for organizations which are mature in project (and overall) risk management practices, they derive significant benefits. Pretty much every successful large project case study by PMI points to effective risk management as a contributing factor.
Now, I do buy into the notion that as complexity increases our ability to identify threats diminishes, but we are still using risk management principles when we establish management reserve to deal with those unknown-unknowns.
In general, I'd say "hate the player, not the game"...

Unfortunatelly most of the vendors of something instead of thinking about the common benefit they think about their own benefit. Instead of searching for more documenation if I would in your place what I would do is this: 1-something we do are wasted? Yes, it could be. 2-go for identify waste as part of our quality process. Waste is anything that is a cost for our clients when cost is not money only. Then, put them to work on identify waste. Saving Changes...
