This is not a valid badge anymore. PMI are working on establishing new criteria for SME’s.

When we click on badge of SME following message is shown
"You must become a subject matter expert to earn this badge"
There are certain badges like TownCrier where it says , its no longer valid

I know that ... I enquired about this a while back and that is the feedback I got. Feel free to email PMI engagement specialists and ask them.

That is a legacy badge. IIRC there are a few discussions related to the same. If you use the search box you'll find other threads which could help provide additional insight.

I researched this before. This is what I found on a question from 2 years ago (https://www.projectmanagement.com/discussi...-the-SME-Badge- ):

The SME badge is actually a very old badge that was issued when the site was initially launched. It was given to members who were paid contributors.
