We all feel proud to be among the affluent clientele elite community of project managers but are you doing project management for living as any other job or you consider it prestige for self actualization?

If your situation improved and you get other better option will you switch over
or you still have a passion for practicing the profession wherever you have a chance?

Riyadh -

I'm in the PM domain but I'm not managing projects anymore (and haven't for a few years). My interests evolved from managing projects, to managing portfolios, to helping companies improve their delivery capabilities to teaching. All in the PM domain, but different skill sets to succeed.

Kiron, good so we can say that you climbed the ladder of PM promotional progressive success but again teaching mentoring is not for everyone

I love what I do, the profession itself, and I strive to take a path such as Kiron.

For me, I’m not sure that it’s as much a passion for practicing the profession, as it is how my brain happens to be wired. My wife describes it as a birth defect. It tends to drive my wife crazy, but she enjoys the outcome (I’m all about the processes). If I were to win the lottery and leave my current position, I would end up using project management principles and procedures in whatever I ended up doing. I can't not :)

I fell into project management as part of career growth when I was asked to lead my former company's PMO. They supported my getting my PMP and since my departure from there, I am now in a full time PM role. I liked the management aspect of running a PMO, how every day was different. But as a straight-up PM, I find the repetition a bit frustrating sometimes. I do like the work but I am not sure I love it. It is something I am really good at but if presented with other interesting opportunities not in the project management realm (or in more of a consulting role, like helping an organization build a PMO or transition from Waterfall to Agile), I think I would purse them if for no other reason than to try something different and see what else is out there. I like to constantly challenge myself and explore.

I enjoy the mental challenge of project management. If I just wanted cash I would have become some sort of IT Engineer - some are paid *very* well.

Eric, I heard you, it is true PM jobs started to pay less than other less stressful jobs but after all we do what we can do.

It's natural for me. I started out as a software developer and loved it. However, after watching projects fail due to poor management, I got an MBA and moved into management, including both projects and operations. Now I'm moving into project management education.
