Would you drop everything to earn twice as much overseas?

Some projects in certain countries pay a crazy amount for expat project managers. Would you leave family and friends to work overseas on a 2-year project if it meant earning twice as much?

I suppose factors such as if you have children and what age? Sure the experience would be great (if you plan on further international work), but money is only money and is much less valuable when it is earned in trade for the values of your family.

I had such an opportunity much earlier in my career to leave North America for a gig with the UN in Geneva for two years. While staying put was the right decision given how young my son was at the time, there are times when I conjecture where I might be now had a I taken that contract.

I think there's a right time for such adventures - true wisdom is figuring out when that is!

I did it. I suppose to answer the question if it is worth it, you have to define 'worth' for yourself. There is this saying that you can make up lost money but you can never make up lost time.

Not for the money alone, that would take at least 4 times as much.
Other than that it would depend on where the job is located, what type of project, and my particular role and involvement in the project.
I would also want my daughter to be older and my wife should probably consent as well.
We already live far away from most of our family so that wouldn't be an issue.

Some very interesting responses. There's so much that goes into working overseas, especially if it's just you.
