When pursuing a graduate degree as a project manager, is it important to focus on getting an MBA or will a degree in any field work just as well?

An MBA is good because it broadens your knowledge and an MPM is good too nut if I had the choice, I woild do MBA.

I chose a Master of Science in Administration.

1. It is similar to an MBA, but with more of a focus on the scientific aspects of a business (it included HR, Project Management, Financial Accounting, etc.)
2. It is apparently only offered at Central Michigan University, the school I went to.
3. It is not an MBA and I have to explain to people all the time what it is and why I chose it over an MBA
4. I would probably choose the MBA if I had to do it all over again solely from a recognition standpoint. From an interest standpoint, I think I liked it better than I would have an MBA.

Micah, there are also masters degrees in project management, commonly MSc in Project Management, and also Graduate Diploma in Project Management. The first is usually 12 subjects plus the dissertation/thesis, and the Grad Dip is usually 8 subjects without the dissertation and around half the cost of a MSc. Some also have Graduate Certificates which are 4 subjects and half the price of the Grad Dip. These are options aside from MBA and MA degrees in Management etc.

Any degree would be added value
For example take degree in Finance it all depends on your field work and what related to your future path.

I agree with points made by Sante & Joshua.
In my view having an MBA is better in the long run.

Hi Micah,

Great to see this conversation.

Allow me to share a little... I suggest you lock a Degree then an MBA or MPM afterwards this way the technical part of the studies are thoroughly satisfied prior to looking at the management and commercial side of services you're forward gearing to.

Good luck and hope this made your day!

My graduate are: Ph.D in Softwre Engineering, MBA, Master on Knowledge Engineering (AI). The degree that helps me a lot is MBA. It helps me a lot because I perform two roles: business analyst and project manager. So, MBA will help you to perform both roles.

An MBA can be a good degree and different programs can have different focus. You should make sure the program is aligned with your interests
