certifications are there to complement experience, not replace it. If you want to get an entry-level certification, go for the CAPM, but try to land a role as a project analyst supporting a PM as that will give you some great hands-on experience.

Thank you for your advice I really appreciate it. I contacted the representatives of a website that offered PMP courses and the certification once I passed the exam. This is my 7th year working for USPS having tasks assigned to each employee in my department (maintenance mechanic) everyday making sure the mail processing machines run smoothly and one of the representatives told me that was enough work experience to apply for the PMP certification because I wasn’t leading the project but I was apart of it. Was that accurate information?

As per education and experience, if you have little experience go to CAPM. If you have experience in projects it's better to start PMP. PMP is the most strong popular certificate in the world!!!!!

As stated above, majority of the certs will require some relevant work experience. Therefore, start with the entry-level CAPM and work your way up.

Your best bet is to volunteer as a Project Manager so you can gain experience. Try www.VolunteerMatch.com; it lists a number of project management positions, many of them virtual.

That does not sound like project management activity to me, rather BAU or operational work.
The CAPM might be a more realistic near term target till you gain some demonstrable project management experience.
You need experience to get the certifications.
