KPIs are often used to measure the past performance of a process in the project management, but did you know that they can be used to see into the future and predict the performance of the organization? KPIs can be used to measure past performance, or predict future performance of PM.
This is because there is a cause and effect relationship between leading and lagging KPIs. When a process is measured, it will in turn effect another process which is also being measured, providing insight to future performance. When Leading and Lagging KPIs are properly understood it provides unique insights to where the performance of the organization or the project manager is going.

Well one example is with risk management, where the we may measure lagging KPI's of the risks that occur, but also leading KPI's to help us mitigate those risks, sometimes known as triggers, warning signs, or just KPI's we put in place that show us the smoke before the fire. Saving Changes...

I am structuring this right now with resource allocation needs on a fixed price project using the prior month to project next - what was budgeted, what was used, are we running hot? Saving Changes...
Andrew, another good example I assume you will maintain a matrix for that and you can set a notification by emails.

CPI is a good example of this. Once your team has spent 20% or more of the original budget, the likelihood of a significant variation in CPI is very low so it can be used pretty reliably to forecast EAC.
On a more qualitative basis, team morale or health survey scores are a leading indicator of resource attrition or reduced productivity.

I think that keys indicators CPI and EAC are ideal for all projects and most importants, also SPI is a key indicator. But the majority of projects managers don't use them.
Great work.

You are absolutely right not many PM use them, however I am looking for more leading KPI

Riyadh: A very thought provoking concept. Thanks for sharing.
I agree with Sante, Leading KPIs can be dressed under different names; triggers, warning signals, etc. however in my experence not many project managers have the bandwidth to structure and shape the project consistently to take heed from the lagging KPIs to enable better predictability of leading KPIs.
