There are several documents describing the nomination and election process of Board directors, the most relevant are
1. https://www.pmi.org/-/media/pmi/documents/...-2016.pdf?la=en
2. https://www.pmi.org/-/media/pmi/documents/...rules.pdf?la=en

Basically,
a. at the end of the year, a call for nominations is sent out to members for identifying potential candidates, candidates are requested to send in documentation
b. a Nomination Committee (NomCom) of 5 volunteers, which is independent of the sitting Board, considers nominated candidates and interviews candidates that made it it to a short list
c. the NomCom then selects up to 10 candidates to be on the ballot, this year 4 of them will be elected as directors for the term 2019-2021
d. midyear, members receive the ballot and the names along with candidate statements and can select the candidates they vote for
e. voting results are officially announced at the membership meeting in LA this year

Maybe, I honestly have no idea how they are chosen ?

Is it mentioned anywhere on the PMI website how those elections are regulated and how candidates are chosen ?
If it is, I haven't seen it ;-)
