Semi-related question: why are quad report templates so popular? Every time I've been handed a quad-chart template, it seems like it includes meaningless and/or redundant information that's artificially split (duplicated) in the four quadrants, but I've never seen much of an advantage in the format. Was there an original format to the quad chart that worked, and everyone since has been poorly replicating the format?

The quadrant chart is useful to delineate pools across two dimensions. I've yet to see an octant chart for three dimensional reporting.
