Creative strategies are required to deal with challenges in agile project management. What are the most pressing challenges in agile project management? How have you overcome them?

The first thing to be successful is to understand that Agile project management does not exists. In fact, something project management does not exists.

The majority of challenges with organizations moving to adaptive delivery models is around behavior and mindset.

Applying a traditional mindset when moving to agile delivery will yield equivalent if not worse results than those achieved from traditional delivery.

There really are no creative strategies to overcome those - leadership and coaching are the solutions.

However, when dealing with tactical challenges e.g. ineffective POs, unpredictable resource allocation, inability to do end-to-end delivery within sprints, there are workarounds so that you can at least limp if you can't run...

Damian, the most practical challenge is to make sure people understand the agile values, principles and the WHY behind them and where it is coming from (mostly from lean manufacturing. Without such understanding people do just the technique that generates suboptimal results or even disappointments.

To satisfy the Terminology Terrorists, let's assume you meant Agile projects rather than Agile project management. The pressing challenges in Agile projects are as Krion stated, but for me it's mindset, org culture, status quo, management resistance etc. that can be the biggest blockers for Agile transformations and projects.

I agree with Sante and Kiron

It is easy to pretend and difficult to practice. It is easy to say we are Agile but difficult to be.
Focus on delivery, not really matters how. Lack of support.

I would use some case studies to show how an Agile approach can yield better results. My favorite source for such stories is Jeff Sutherland's book, Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time. Here's a link to it on Amazon: http://a.co/gOee3Qs

Organisation culture, systems/procedures in place and mindset are the major stumbling blocks. Effective Change management with participation and buy-in from all relevant stakeholders is the key.

Just to clarify my comment above, let me write about my actual work place. In my actual work place we have five process/methods to create any type product/service/results some Agile based and some non-Agile based. The same person is assigned to initiatives simultaneously where those initiatives are following both type of process/method. And the assigned people are still portfolio/program/project manager following the PMI way to do things as a basement. Tools, techniques, life cycle could differ between agile and non-agile based. We have defined the use of the same as much as possible for all. Name of role if you use Agile based framework like Scrum could differ too but because are roles you can adapt to the defined roles without problem.

Damian - If you meant challenges with agile projects then the biggest one is the culture change. If the team that you get has been doing waterfall or just new to agile in general, the mindset change is the biggest thing. You would encounter it every step of the way. You would have to work on that slowly because everyone will not be receptive to new ideas at once and so you 'd have to bake it in slowly.

Biggest challenge is and will always be people. Despite your best plans for agile project management, people have variable schedules and personal circumstances, team imbalances, etc. can lead to a project getting derailed.
