This post is to initiate a thread of discussion on the following basis:
Post the barriers/frustrations faced in daily life whilst working as a PM and what you have done to overcome them, or to solicit responses from people within the discussion on whether they have faced similar issues and how they have overcome them.
Note: This is not intended to result purely in a Rant about being a PM, but to create postive responses to common issues faced by a PM in the "Real" world of Project Management.
To Get The Ball Rolling:
Rant: Decisions made without considering the ramifications of those decisions, just to then complain and expose the "who to blame" culture when things go wrong several months down the line.
Lessons Learned: Use evidence of previous experiences to demonstrate how similar lack of consideration to decisions have resulted in failed projects and find a "warm ear" as senior and influential as possible to become an ambassador to the cause. IF the decision is still made, at least then the Sponsor is aware/informed of the pontential ramifications and then IF "unravelling" needs to take place (usually by the PM) to get things back on track, all efforts are spent productively getting things back into control rather than "who to hang". Saving Changes...
One of the most significant changes I made in my practice of PM several years ago was to expand my focus beyond the methods, tasks, and project completion goals, and instead expand my "mental scope" to take "ownership" of the project in terms of my attitude toward it.
A sense of ownership both motivates and focuses my efforts.
By taking this approach, I find I am more proactive in running the project. I am also more thorough in forming a WBS, examining risks, scheduling, communicating with team members, exerting project control ... actually in all aspects of the work.
This is a useful mindset that lays a good foundation for project success.
