I personally thank them often. I try my best to make them visible to the senior leaders for recognition of their efforts, knowledge & performance. Saving Changes...

I thank them for teaching me, I thank them for responding when I have an urgent question, I thank them for not calling me an idiot when it takes me two hours to grasp a concept that they regard as simple. I thank them for spending hours with me going over processes in detail; which is about the only way my projects get off the ground.
I try to thank them whenever they do something that nudges the goals a little closer.
I try to avoid thanking them when they aren't that good (unless they do something worthy of thanks). I have done that in the past as a form of encouragement, it doesn't seem to work - the opposite seems to happen. Saving Changes...
